The Municipal library is 196 years old!

Dear patrons! As we admit that 196 years seem like a lot, roughly triple the retirement age, you know as well as we do, that we are young at heart!

Aren't we?

The Municipal Library is the oldest institution of the town of Akureyri, established in 1827. It opened in its current housing in 1968 (November).

Since the library got into a good housing, its operation has grown and flourished steadily. The great extension was opened in March 2004 and makes everything much better, for both employees and guests. Exhibitions, lectures, courses and clubs are big bart of the operation which is of course a lot more than just loaning out library holdings. Actually, the library has evolved very much and we are very proud of it. This is our library.

We should also mention that the house includes a coffee house and the District Archives in Akureyri.

We could spend a long time to talk about the library's history and operations, but we'll let these links do: here is a documentary about the library (in Icelandic!) and also a subpage with its history.

Congratulations - and happy birthday! Only four years to big 2 0 0 !!!!
