The Fiske monument is just above the harbor in Grímsey.

Daniel Willard Fiske (November 11, 1831 – September 17, 1904) was an American librarian and scholar, born on November 11, 1831, at Ellisburg, New York.
Mr. Fiske sailed pass the island in the 1870s and was intrigued by the lifestyle of the inhabitants and their love of chess. It prompted him to donate a chess set to every home and he also donated a considerable amount of money to the community to support their future ventures.

The islanders celebrate his memory every year on his birthday on the 11th of November.

By the monument one can find a signpost telling about Daniel Willard Fiske.
