Icelandic Language Club and boardgame B.Eyja

On Saturday April 29th Fan Sissoko og Helen Cova, authors of the board game B.Eyja came to the Municipal library of Akureyri to present their game to people learning Icelandic and offer a trial run to receive feedback. The participants enjoyed this opportunity as there is a need for more varied material for people learning Icelandic. The aim of the game is to practice, cooperate, and increase self-confidence to use Icelandic in daily life. Even if you say something incorrectly, it is ok, you must keep trying.

The participants filled out a survey at the end of the try-out. It showed that the participants liked the game and were willing to play it again. At least a half would be interested in owning the game and would play it with family and friends. Some thought it would be great to be able to borrow the game from the library or play it here.

To increase practice opportunities, the participants expressed interest in having a broad selection of board games for Icelandic learners, especially for beginners, and having a good selection of easy-to-read books for adults. They enjoyed trying something that doesn't resemble a lesson, to practice in a fun and relaxed way.

We continue to have a good conversation with the participants of the Icelandic club and encourage them to come to us with ideas about more diverse and fun ways to practice the language.

The Icelandic language club will be held in collaboration with the Red Cross this summer. Starting June 1st, the Icelandic club will be held weekly at the library at 16:30 on Thursdays!
