Akureyri is the centre of culture, education and leisure activities in North Iceland. With a population of about 17.200, the town is by far the largest outside the Reykjavík capital area.

Akureyri intercultural centre is intended as a service point for people of foreign origin, citizens of other countries and those who have recently made their homes in Iceland. The centre specialises in services and issues relating to people from abroad and looks after their interests.

The intercultural centre is operated by Akureyri Municipality in co-operation with a large number of other parties and agencies in Akureyri, and in the whole of Iceland, in relation to specific topics and issues.

The operations of the intercultural centre

Advisory and information services:
The centre can be visited, or consulted by telephone, for advice regarding education, social services, taxation, insurance, health services, courses in Icelandic, residence and employment permits as well as numerous other issues.

Interpretation:
The intercultural centre has contacts with interpreters and translators for the benefit of organisations which may need such services and to help the personnel of various organisations to provide the information required of them. Such organisations are for example, hospitals, social departments, kindergartens etc.

Courses and educational projects:
The centre provides instruction and education on intercultural matters, Icelandic society, Icelandic for foreigners and on specific countries and cultural areas.

Icelandic as a foreign language / Icelandic for immigrants

The courses are for beginners,intermediate and advanced students, maximum 12 participants in each group.

The courses are devided in to 3 stages,  according to  skills. Each course is two times a week and runs  for 12 weeks.

The price for one course is 11.000 kr. Unions and individual companys support ther members/staff with paying up to 80% of the fee.

Courses on spring semester 2007

Icelandic for foreigners I

Stage1, 50 hr. monday and wednesday 17:15-18:40

Beginners course in Icelandic.Basic vocabulary, aimed at developing simple conversation skills, is introduced, for example greetings, numbers, telling the time, commenting on the weather, discussing the family and the home. Basic grammar is presented. The Icelandic alphabet is also studied closely in relation to pronunciation. 

 Course starts: 24.01.2007          Course ends: 18.04.2007 

Price: 11.000 isk.

 

Icelandic for foreigners II

Stage 2, 50 hr. tue. and ths. 17:30-18:55

Continuation from level one. Building up vocabulary is emphasized. Topics may include daily activities, shopping, professions, appearance and employment. The practice of pronunciation is continued.

Course starts:23.01.2007            Course ends: 24.04.2007 

 

Icelandic for foreigners III

Stage 3, 50 hr. mon. and wed. 19:15-20:40

Continuation from level two. Varied vocabulary from daily life, newspapers and brochures is used. Subjects may include hobbies, travel, news, feelings and emotions, clothing, body and health, etc. Pronunciation is practised with the needs of the students in mind.

Icelandic for foreigners – Spoken Icelandic

 30 hr. Tue. 17:30-19:30

 This course is for people who have completed at least two courses of Icelandic. They should understand Icelandic quite well when spoken to, even if they have difficulty speaking. The aim of the course is to enable students to express opinions about various contemporary or popular issues, and how to ask for and give information. The emphasis is on language use.
